This is how my oil paintings begin. After a rough sketch of the composition has been drawn on the canvas, the basic tonal-values are painted on in a thin wash. This not only establishes the value structure, but provides a good base to apply subsequent color. And the color of the underpainting shows through the opaque color of the painting-proper enough to unify the color-scheme. If the painting is to be basically cool, I do a warm underpainting; if the painting is to be basically warm, I do a cool underpainting. |
